Effects of ablations of temporal cortex upon speech sound discrimination in the monkey.

چکیده
Ten monkeys were trained on two auditory discrimination problems of different levels of difficulty plus one visual pattern discrimination task. Bilateral conical ablations were made of either the ventral portion of the superior tem· poral gyrus to the depth of the superior temporal sulcus in the midtemporal region, or of the primary auditory projection cortex of the supratemporal plane extending onto the insular cortex in the depths of the lateral fissure. ~onkeys with bilateral ablations of inferior temporal cortex were included as controls. Post operative perfonnance revealed a modality-specific deficit in audition for the midtemporal area, and an apparent inability to relearn a speech-sound discrimination after lesion of primary auditory cortex.

Background: The main result of hearing impairment is reduction of speech perception. Patient with auditory neuropathy can hear but they can not understand. Their difficulties have been traced to timing related deficits, revealing the importance of the neural encoding of timing cues for understanding speech. Objective: In the present study psychoacoustic perception (minimal noticeable differen...
متن کاملThe effects of lesions of auditory cortex on discrimination of sound localization in dog.
The studies by Neff on cats (Neff et al. 1950, 1956) have demostrated that bilateral ablations of the temporal cortex produce dramatic impairments of auditory cue localization. I t was considered useful to test his results by a completely different method, namely by utilizing go-no-go differentiation to two auditory stimuli, sounding from different places in standard conditioned reflex experime...
متن کاملFrontal-temporal disconnection abolishes object discrimination learning set in macaque monkeys.
Two previous studies have shown that frontal-temporal disconnection in monkeys, produced by unilateral ablation of frontal cortex in one hemisphere and of visual inferior temporal cortex in the opposite hemisphere is entirely without effect on visual object-reward association learning in concurrent discrimination tasks. This is a surprising finding in light of the severe impairments that follow...
متن کاملMedial temporal and prefrontal function: recent behavioural disconnection studies in the macaque monkey.
In the macaque monkey, disconnection syndromes can be produced experimentally either by selective section of axonal pathways or by crossed unilateral asymmetrical ablations. Behavioural investigation of the effects of these disconnections gives information that cannot be derived either from clinical studies or from the effects of bilateral symmetrical ablations in the monkey. Disconnection expe...

Objectives: Most of the studies performed on aging and auditory system have historically focused on speech perception disorders in elderly people. According to studies, speech discrimination disorders in aged people usually result from auditory temporal processing impairment. Our study was done to determine the ability of aged people to discriminate time compressed speech. Methods & Material...
